I'm writing blogs and listing my heart out with getting some traffic. Oddcast is one of my favourite widgets (if you will) and here are some translations. There are more languages but I am interested in hearing if these come even close to getting my message out!

The voices are cool, there are 60 I think, male and female. It occurred to me to save L$20 on each listing by adding these excerps into the ABOUT LAND tab at Ooberscom and Ireben parcels. L$50 for the cheapest listing on SEARCH, anyhow.

So, if anyone can tell me if these are good (or bad) they can have a copy of any ART in the current Show. The pics are all L$100 each, copy/modify/transfer. At least that is the plan!

This is a great Group to join on Flicker.

Being able to post video and images along with a Post is a fantastic service and I anticipate utilising this feature to the max..

As I attend more inworld classes I appreciate the outcome more. We take so much for granted and are easily disgruntled when things don't go as we wish.

I have learned many technical facts in SL classes but the most worthy item is patience and persistance!

Land Management - Security Issues On Second Life

Morphing from Grogman to LegalEagal, I have three interesting security issues gleaned from a conversation reported on the wiki Law Librarians in Virtual Worlds.

Law Librarian Cat Galieo (rl Kate Fitz) gives a talk on Land Management issues on Second Life and reports this in CHAT form.

Being a Security Gal the standout Items noted were one possible solution to diehardGRIEFERS (SL antagonists and those somewhat disturbed) and a perplexing problem concerning self replicating PRIMS. ABUSE REPORTS are mentioned also.

Hey, you say, that's only two issues! True, the most interesting (albeit to me)is the AGE Verification process used for security purposes by the Managers of Land. I actually tested this out this evening. The Message you get when you enter an area set to accept Residents who have registered for AGE clearance - gives you an option to go to the website and login to your account. After providing the information required and self verifying the permission is given (or not)!

The whole process took only a couple of minutes tops (this could be because I did Register a long time ago)and I was on my way.

For my industries (liquor and security) Age is of a primary concern. 'If only to protect yourself' are wise words from Cat.

Self Replicating PRIMS - OMG. I immediately thought about that fancy 'Create Your Own TEXTURES Class' I didn't attend but read the notes to - there are TEXTURES and there are VERY BAD TEXTURES, with laggy footprints I hear. Sounds scary, eh? I dare say a stealthy person might make these prims invisableand/or hiding them by making them tiny (but they still count don't they?)and making you nutts looking for them or having to sweep the Land clean.

When I was working nightshift as a prison warder we had to do a Perimiter Check prior to taking over a Post, plus intermittant sweeps during the shift and prior to handing over to the morning crew. This position lasted for only a year or so but left indelible habits that have stood me well later in life.

This was back in the early '70's when I held American Citizenship and while not accepted into the Queensland Police Force, was allowed on the first High Security P.O.Training Course for Female Officers at HMS Wacol Gaol, Qld. I served the Queen at Boggo Road Gaol during the roaring days of the infamous 'Whiskey a GO-GO Fire' and other amazing goings on and yes I do know 'where a few bones a buried'. Sadly.

I try (time is needed) to give my Properties on Second Life a Perimeter Check, at least I zoom up and fly around with 'night time' and 'Show Others' under 'Objects'- makes things glow in the dark - to seek out unwanted objects and scripts. The mini map is handy also. The first time I did an airial check I found BOMBS, some of them comical if not deadly and all kinds of stuff that visitors seem to leave behind even in real life..

ABUSE REPORTS - well I have never used them. Yet! I use many tactics to keep peace. I have only ever banned two people, one for the twn minutes I needed to complete a task and then I put it back. The other guy I forgot and later discovered uses several Avatars to engage you in phony neighbourhood disputes.

Cat Galileo in her conversation said something like, "ABUSE REPORTS are monitored by the Lindens but don't expect a quick reply". So, apparently if enough reports come in, enough to create a visable pattern, the Lindens can refuse to service anyone using that IP address. Like security in real life, you can only keep out honest people - if someone wants to get in they will.

This brings me to the next security blog I'm working on right now:

There are many great Libraries on Second Life, ('in' or 'on'?)and I enjoy finding new ones. We are supplying a library of sorts for vARTS as part of our commitment to promote career/business development.

I have looked at a few BOOK makers on SLX, one which caught my eye takes web links, yeeeah! We will Link to online Libraries, Resource sites and of course LandMarks for the good folks who have such resources. The vARTS Library is blocked by the 'Buy Pass' feature used to record Avatar activity and keep a flow of traffic..

We have listed our vARTS Galleries on a (new to me)Kiosk created by Sansun Steinbeck. She has gathered up some 500 Galleries across Second Life who submit a Pic and Landmark for inclusion to a List (from three catagories). We should get her to make a Library Kiosk. he heh heh

18 months ago I was introduced to Second Life by our Computer Guy.

We had several conversations before I was even convinced to at least go on the site and see for myself. Our business was just taking off and we were already doing six days a week and 10 - 12 hour days at that. The 'game' as I was told sounded interesting and fun but it all sounded too puerile for me at that time and not really in my field of expertise.

I decided to continue on a free account as a visitor for some 6 - 7 months before buying a premium account. It took me that long to learn the skills required to 'get around' Second Life' with the aide of video tutorials created by Torley Linden.

A Premium Account allows you to operate more efficiently and has many extra benefits that a small business can use to see where they are heading. Once you have signed up a snip of CODE can be accessed and placed on your websites/blogs inviting VISITORS to Second Life. Visitors signing up for a Premium Account from your Second Life Banner will assist you to recoup your investment by creating a small commission.

Yes, that is the plan : )

Meanwhile we have gently poked around SL looking for ways to join in the community.

There are many fascinating Mailing Lists, Groups and Clubs to join.

SL allows for creation of Groups which cost $100 Linden Dollars to set up. We started up 'The Print Room Saloon' which was a CLUBHOUSE for our Melbourne customers to join.

That project was soon terminated for lack of interest and we then decided to sponsor the virtual ARTS as vARTS SPONSOR. You can now visit several places of interest which all have a coresponding website linked to them for future commercial opportunities. EXAMPLE -
is now a growing chain of Galleries that are available and open to the Public. Visitors can buy VIRTUAL ARTWORK or order from the artist. Not all of the artists displayed are available but you can often meet the artist yourself and perhaps commission your own art from them.

That's the plan. : )

Another decision was to combine our resources with our consultancy business - Security Market Brokers - to offer business the opportunity to come on Second Life with our guidance and support. We have a website developing for this service @ Security Market Brokers. Promote and sell your inworld Product and Services with us or raise your business profile by advertising on our websites.

While Second Life is HOME we have extended our visits to other virtual worlds.

Many VWS and NEWSLETTERS later I discovered the Association Of Virtual Worlds. It is the hottest site to join if you are a business or on the net and into virtual/3D stuff. Join our Aussie Group when you sign up and annoy CHRIS THORNE, he will show you around the site's services better than I!

Meanwhile back at SL we have been improving our skills set to offer better services and access to new Products as we source them. There is a learning curve that requires the most important resource we have - time! There is a KNOWLEDGE BASE I use, & classes going on SL all the time.

We have over a dozen websites now, all linked to our main business. What to do? No problem, just add a bit of codse to your site and it opens up a whole new world.

Now I can log in and invite customers to my site, similar to 3D chat rooms. But wait - there is more! Along with being able to watch videos, listen to music or hold meetings - each of my other sites become Rooms that lead off the first site/space!

Apart from working in the print/advertising industry for 40 years and having an appreciation and love for the printed word, I was blown out with my first issue of SL'ang Life - Real Information At Home' delivered in the POST.

I spent a good while perusing my second copy delivered all the way from POLAND free. (Oh, I like free, but this is so good I ALMOST feel guilty!)

My partner and I have both worked on newspapers/mags/journals etc etc and Simon has also worked on the telly and radio, but we both were very impressed with this publication from a professional advertising sales point of view.

This mob offers free sites, support and more.. If you are an artist (new and old to the net) this is a great starter.

No need for a degree in ROCKET SCIENCE, there is a blog, galleries and heaps of help along the way. I liked it. What the Premium charges are I do not know, but you can link to any website you might already have.

I always link to our virtual art galleries on Second Life now.

How much more interesting to invite visitors to a virtual gallery - perhaps even meet up with them and have a chat about this and that.

You could end up discussing future Commissions or up coming Events etc and in doing so, generate more interest in your work.

I believe there is an income to made from Second Life but in general, the majority of it not by the actual inworld Sales - that amount (usually) just covers some of the expense of running a virtual arm of your business!

What the real benefit of a 3D website is the people you meet and the many international connections made through going about your business - far outweigh any amount of $'s earned from inworld Products and Services.

One other BONUS is that on SL there are Language Translating Products available.

So, with much "salt thrown over ones' shoulder", you could meet up with an art collector and have a great chat (through one of the many fine SL Products available for purchase on SLX Exchange.com)and have the kind of meeting whereby you make a real connection with your audience in a meaningful way and with someone who speaks another language!! Bargin.
